Ascension Alabama Grand Rounds 2023 - Pain Conference 12/5/2023

Comprehensive Pain Review
8:30AM - 9:30AM
Linda Vanni, MSN

The specialty of pain management has changed drastically over the past few years.  Factors such as the move to multi-modal pain therapies, how elective inpatient surgeries have switched to outpatient, and how the continuing opioid epidemic has created opportunities for a different mindset related to pain management.

Objectives:
* Describe the factors changing the specialty of pain management
* Explore how fentanyl has changed the opioid epidemic
* Identify one future trend in pain management
Examinng Pharmcological and Non Pharmacological Options
9:30AM - 10:30AM
Linda Vanni, MSN

Pharmacologic agents, especially opioids, have often been the mainstay of pain management.  Although there are new pharmacologic agents developed due to the identification of new pain receptors and chemical transmitters, utilization of non-pharmacologic agents is now considered an essential part of a pain management plan.

Objectives:

*Identify the advantages of Pharmacologic and Non-Pharmacologic options in the specialty of Pain Management
*Describe the Pharmacologic agents utilized in pain management
* State two non-pharmacologic methods commonly used in addition to pharmacologic agents

New Thoughts on Pain Assessment and Moments of Conflict in Care of Patients with Pain
10:30AM - 11:30AM
Stefan G. Kertesz, MD

This lecture introduces a framework for how to assess patients with long-term pain, accounting for potential pain and addiction

Objectives:

*Physician reactions that can impose new risks on the care relationship
*Misunderstandings of opioids' benefit/harm balance that may spur sudden discontinuation
*Studies showing a high prevalence of sudden opioid discontinuation

CDC 2022 Guideline for Prescribing Opioids for Pain
11:30AM - 12:30PM
Stefan G. Kertesz, MD

After a major upward swing in the US opioid prescribing from 1993 until 2012, opioid prescribing fell rapidly, reaching per capita levels by 1993 by 2020.  Reductions undertaken in the wake of the CDC's 2016 Guideline had some adverse effects, which led to the 2022 Revision.

Objectives:
*Learners will be able to describe key changes made by the CDC to its opioid prescribing guideline in 2022, and the rationale behind those changes
*Learners will be able to articulate the impact of including a wide range of stakeholders in crafting the revised CDC Guideline
*Learners will be able to offer their patients rational decisions that combine considerations of ethics, safety and pain reduction in relation to prescribed opioids

Commercial Interest: No commercial interest was received for this CE/CME activity.
