Overview

Substance Abuse - In the activity we will discuss the mechanism of substance use disorders and go into more detail concerning treatment of alcohol and opioid abuse disorders.


Taking the Pain Out of Opioid Therapy - In this activity we will teach learners to identify caveats in opioid selection and identify tools used for opioid equivalency for transition of opioids to ensure patient safety and manage pain.

Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, learners will be able to:

  1. Describe pathophysiology for substance use
  2. Identify the difference between substance use disorder and substance induced disorder
  3. Review basic pain concepts and the WHO analgesic step ladder
  4. Describe the mechanism of action of opioids and their side effects
  5. Identify additional patient care needs for patients on opioids
