Overview
Being "tongue-tied" has been associated with a variety of infant feeding issues. including disruption of successful breastfeeding. Beyond infancy, the impact of tethered oral tissues on dental development, speech and self-esteem is incompletely understood. This presentation will go over the AAP Clinical Report on Ankyloglossia and the breastfeeding infant that was published in 2024.

Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, learners will be able to:

  1. Describe the current level of evidence to support surgical intervention for ankyloglossia and other tethered oral tissues.
  2. Summarize the ongoing areas of debate and need for research in ankyloglossia and other tethered oral tissues.
  3. Identify a differential for breastfeeding problems and an approach for collaboration with other providers, including pediatricians, lactation consultants, otolaryngologists, dentists, and speech and language pathologists in evaluating and treating infants with breastfeeding problems.
  4. Adopt a relationship-centered approach to communicating with families of breastfeeding infants to optimize patient satisfaction and quality of care.
